The Community Sharps website aims to provide
NSW Councils and other interested individuals and organisations
with information about the safe management of needles, syringes
and other "sharps" used by people with diabetes and other medical
conditions requiring self-injection in the home, and syringes
used by injecting drug users in the home or in public places.
Community Sharps is the collective term used to describe
sharps that have been generated by non-clinical activities.
The Community Sharps Management Guidelines were developed as
the result of consultation with a wide range of stakeholders
involved in the life cycle of community sharps. This website
includes a full copy of the Guidelines, together with other
material that will assist Councils to manage risks and minimise
harm associated with the inappropriate disposal of community
sharps.
This website is facilitated
by the Medical Industry Association
of Australia. The Medical Industry Association of Australia
(MIAA) is the national peak industry body representing companies
in the medical technology industry. MIAA aims to ensure the
benefits of modern, innovative and reliable medical technology
are delivered to the community for a healthier Australia.
The website is sponsored by members of MIAA who manufacture
or supply syringes, needles and lancets, to encourage and support
the responsible management of products that after use become
community sharps.
This website represents an
example of shared responsibility (product stewardship)
by the website sponsors to provide NSW councils and other stakeholders
with information and resources for the management of community
sharps.
